지메일의 넉넉한 용량과 사용이 편리한 기능들은 만족스럽지만 스팸메일 필터링 여부의 설정을 사용자가 할 수 없다는 것이 단점이다. 스팸이 아님에도 불구하고 지메일에서 스팸으로 처리하는 경우가 종종 있기 때문이다. 환경설정에서 사용자가 스팸함 사용여부를 선택할 수 있으면 좋겠지만 이러한 기능이 지원되지 않으므로 필터링 기능을 사용하여 임시로마나 스팸처리를 막을 수 있다. 우선 gmail에 로그인해서 환경설정 -> 필터 -> 새 필터 만들기를 클릭한다. (아래 사진을 클릭하면 원본크기로 보실 수 있습니다)  새 필터 만들기를 클릭하면 필터생성창이 뜨고 모든 메일에 대해서 스팸이 안되도록 할 것 이므로 보낸사람 위치에 *을 입력한 뒤 다음 단계를 클릭한다  다음 창에서 스팸아님을 클릭 후 필터 만들기를 하면 끝  이렇게 설정해두면 지메일의 스팸 분류기능은 무시되고, 아웃룩이나 썬더버드에서 스팸여부를 관리할 수 있다.
